Note 1.  Definition of tree:  A tree is a woody plant having one erect perennial stem or trunk at leas 3 inches in diameter at 4.5 feet above the ground, a more or less definite formed crown of foliage and a height of at least 12 feet. (US Agriculture Handbook No. 541)

Note 2.  In a tree with multiple stems arising below 4.5 feet, only the largest stem is measured, at 4.5 feet above the ground.

Note 3. Height measurements of trees up to about 25 feet tall can be made most easily with a stiff carpenter's rule pushed vertically up through the crown.
